Building the Village
Catholic Charities’ Sacred Heart Veteran Village serves as a comprehensive, transitional housing program to bring area unhoused veterans out of homelessness and into stable housing and healthy independent living. Veterans should not be homeless, and Catholic Charities is working to eliminate veterans experiencing homelessness.
Upon completion, the village will consist of 26 tiny homes and a resource center. These bungalows (approximately 300-500 square feet each) will be placed in ‘pods’ of four homes to enhance the sense of community and privacy. All tiny homes are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and many will be barrier-free. The village includes a 5,000 square foot Veteran Resource Center to serve as the hub of the program. The Veteran Resource Center has a large multi-function room that will allow activities from half-court basketball games to a meeting space that will allow presentations and training for around 60 attendees. It also has a kitchen, fitness room, and spaces designated for support groups counseling, and trainings. There will also be beautiful outdoor areas to encourage community engagement.
The resource center serves the housing program veterans living at the village, but it is also available to all veterans in Flint, Genesee County, and surrounding areas to serve a larger number of veterans in need. This will make the City of Flint and Genesee County a place of community and healing for veterans.
