Adoption & Foster Care

At Catholic Charities of Shiawassee and Genesee Counties (CCSGC), we provide help and hope to children awaiting the welcome and support of a foster or adoptive family. Every day, children need safety, stability, routine and an abundance of love. With foster care and adoption, many government agencies are involved and CCSGC is here to assist those caring families who open both their heart and home to children in need. In the case of adoption, both the biological and adoptive parents need support throughout the process. We answer the call.

For more information about Foster Care and Adoption please contact Deborah Pettway, Director of Child Welfare, at (810) 232-3418 ext. 321 or givehope@ccsgc.org

Foster care

We recruit, train, and license individuals and families interested in becoming foster parents for Catholic Charities. Children placed in foster care have been removed from their homes due to abuse and/or neglect. Our goal is permanent placement for a child in a loving, caring, and safe environment.

We strive to ensure children experience as few foster care placements as possible since every move is difficult and presents its own set of challenges to a child. The goal in foster care is to return the child to their biological home or family circle; therefore, the role of a foster parent is vital to the well being of children in need.  If you are currently a foster parent or considering becoming one, visit www.michigan.gov/mdhhs/ for more information on child welfare law, forms applications, assistance programs, program updates and more.

Adoption

Many of the children we see are wards of the State because their parents' rights have been terminated.  Our services assist families wishing to adopt with the administrative procedures of adoptions, such as home and profile studies, questions and obstacles that arise, and through each step of the process.

Our caring team has experienced many situations and changes in adoption over the years, providing CCSGC with specialized expertise to assist every life touched by adoption.  CCSGC adoption services include:

  • Information classes covering the adoption process in detail with explanations on various options.

  • Home study assistance in providing required written materials for independent adoption, legal work, and adoption supervision.

  • Post-adoption support including respite care, recreational activities, and monthly group meetings.

  • Confidential intermediary searches for birth parents and adoptees who were part of the CCSGC adoption process.
