Community Services
Providing More Than a Meal.  Providing Hope.

Catholic Charities has been offering help, hope and a meal since the North End Soup Kitchen (NESK) was founded in 1940.  A vital community leader, NESK helps the poor and needy in Genesee County with food with clothing, personal needs and household items from the Community Closet, or meals at Holy Angels Soup Kitchen, a sack lunch program, and a Kids Summer Camp.  Volunteers are essential to the success of every program; we welcome volunteers of all ages.  From families and school or church groups to fraternities and sororities or businesses and individuals -- our most important assets are our volunteers and donors.

Quilters Garden

Put Hope in a Box for Christmas

The Quilters Garden in Fenton helped to bring Christmas to the children at Catholic Charities Soup Kitchens. Last year, more than 225 children received a gift, along with towels and socks for more than 150 adults on Christmas Day at the North End Soup Kitchen. One donor was the lucky winner of a beautiful handmade, queen-size quilt.

Generous Hearts Provide a Generator for the

North End Soup Kitchen

The next time a big storm rolls through, Jon Manse will be thinking about Joe and Denise Drudi. The Grand Blanc couple recently sold their home and decided to give their generator to the North End Soup Kitchen.

Donor Denise Drudi and  Jon Manse, Director of Community Services, in front of one of the walk-in coolers at the North End Soup Kitchen (NESK) that will operate during any power outage thanks to the new generator.

"We couldn't be more grateful,"stated Manse,

Director of Community Services.  "I can't tell you the number of times the power has gone out and we have had to scramble to save everything in our coolers. We've even had times when we were in the building and the lights have gone out.  That will never happen again, thanks to Joe and Denise."  The food for all of Catholic Charities' meal programs (North End, Holy Angels and South Flint Soup Kitchens as well as three sack lunch locations)

is prepared at the North End Soup Kitchen, averaging nearly 145,000 meals annually.

If you would like to make a donation or

gift to the North End Soup Kitchen,

Catholic Charities

Proudly Honors its Volunteers

The work of Catholic Charities of Shiawassee and Genesee Counties would not be possible without its volunteers, and it is that work and dedication that was celebrated during a special gathering of nearly 300 volunteer guests as they gathered for our Annual Volunteer Dinner held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish on April 13, 2011.

Catholic Charities is greateful to the more than 13,000 volunteers who aided programs and events last year, providing nearly 57,500 hours of service –

nearly double the total of 2001.

“I am constantly in awe of the generosity the people in our community, states Vicky Schultz, president/CEO of Catholic Charities.” Community Services Director, Jon K. Manse, agrees, “It’s not a coincidence that our celebration falls during National Volunteer Week.  For us, and many of our nation’s non-profit and community organizations, we simply couldn’t do what we do if it weren’t for the thousands of individuals who offer us their time and talents every day of the year. We have volunteers at our Soup Kitchens every day of the year, in our Community Closet, at our Summer Camp, or assisting with special events. They are people from all across the region, not just from Genesee or Shiawassee Counties.”

Each year special awards are

given in five categories.

This year’s recipients are:

Volunteer of the Year Award

St. Pius X Parish (Flint)

Golden Soup Bowl Award

Amelia Urbeck

Partnership Award

Lincoln Park United Methodist Church,

site of the South Flint Soup Kitchen (Flint)

Agency Collaboration Award

New Paths, Inc. (Flint)

Outstanding Youth Group Award

Lake Fenton Middle School (Fenton)

Volunteers were treated to a fabulous meal

generously donated by Julie Blalock of Kickin’ Catering of Flushing and prepared with assistance from the staff of the North End Soup Kitchen.

McDunnough Inc.

Lends a Hand at NESK

It's not every day that an entire company shuts down to help those in need, but that's the way things operate at Fenton's McDunnough, Inc., a plastic recycler, processor, broker and supplier of recycled materials. Owner, Darren McDunnough, his wife, and his entire staff spent the afternoon preparing and serving a hot meal to guests at at the North End Soup Kitchen (NESK). "Serving our community is important to us. We took this opportunity to tell our clinets and vendors what we were doing. We hope it encorages them to do the same," according to company owner, Darren McDunnough.

Partnership with Lincoln Park United Methodist Church Creates New South Flint Soup Kitchen

The new South Flint Soup Kitchen opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on on Wednesday, January 12, 2011. The Soup Kitchen is the result of Catholic Charities' successful partnership with Lincoln Park United Methodist Church (located on Fenton, Road, north of Atherton Road) extending our ability to feed the hungry across Genesee County. Pastors from area United Methodist churches joined Lincoln Park pastor Rev. Maurice Horne, along with Catholic Charities President Vicky Schultz and Community Services Director, Jon K. Manse.
