NESK Summer Camp 2011 Summer Camp celebrated the close of another year on Wednesday, August 3. Children, ranging in age from 5 to 12 years old, once again gathered at St. Mary School in Flint to learn and have fun this summer. Backpacks, prizes and entertainment provided by SYI teen leaders made the final day of camp a special one. All summer, campers enjoyed free breakfast and lunch each day, and learned new things, celebrated Christmas in July, played games and visited Filpansik Park. NESK Summer Camp 2011 was supported by the Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with our friends at St. Mary's Catholic Parish in Flint. If you would like to help Summer Camp 2012, call 810-785-6911. Christmas & Easter Giveaways Beautifully wrapped Christmas gifts and Easter baskets are given to area children during our special holiday gatherings. We are always in need of gifts for children; or your generous gift of time as a volunteer. If you are interested in making a difference during the holiday season, please call 810-785-6911.

Generous Hearts Provide a Generator for the North End Soup Kitchen
The next time a big storm rolls through, Jon Manse will be thinking about Joe and Denise Drudi. The Grand Blanc couple recently sold their home and decided to give their generator to the North End Soup Kitchen. Donor Denise Drudi and Jon Manse, Director of Community Services, in front of one of the walk-in coolers at the North End Soup Kitchen (NESK) that will operate during any power outage thanks to the new generator. "We couldn't be more grateful,"stated Manse, Director of Community Services. "I can't tell you the number of times the power has gone out and we have had to scramble to save everything in our coolers. We've even had times when we were in the building and the lights have gone out. That will never happen again, thanks to Joe and Denise." The food for all of Catholic Charities' meal programs (North End, Holy Angels and South Flint Soup Kitchens as well as three sack lunch locations) is prepared at the North End Soup Kitchen, averaging nearly 145,000 meals annually. If you would like to make a donation or gift to the North End Soup Kitchen, please call 810-785-6911. See the story on WJRT-TV 12
Catholic Charities Proudly Honors its Volunteers
The work of Catholic Charities of Shiawassee and Genesee Counties would not be possible without its volunteers, and it is that work and dedication that was celebrated during a special gathering of nearly 300 volunteer guests as they gathered for our Annual Volunteer Dinner held in San Juan Diego Hall at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish on April 13, 2011. Catholic Charities is greateful to the more than 13,000 volunteers who aided programs and events last year, providing nearly 57,500 hours of service – nearly double the total of 2001. “I am constantly in awe of the generosity the people in our community, states Vicky Schultz, president/CEO of Catholic Charities.” Community Services Director, Jon K. Manse, agrees, “It’s not a coincidence that our celebration falls during National Volunteer Week. For us, and many of our nation’s non-profit and community organizations, we simply couldn’t do what we do if it weren’t for the thousands of individuals who offer us their time and talents every day of the year. We have volunteers at our Soup Kitchens every day of the year, in our Community Closet, at our Summer Camp, or assisting with special events. They are people from all across the region, not just from Genesee or Shiawassee Counties.”
Each year special awards are given in five categories. This year’s recipients are: Volunteer of the Year Award
St. Pius X Parish (Flint) Golden Soup Bowl Award Amelia Urbeck Partnership Award Lincoln Park United Methodist Church, site of the South Flint Soup Kitchen (Flint) Agency Collaboration Award New Paths, Inc. (Flint) Outstanding Youth Group Award Lake Fenton Middle School (Fenton) Volunteers were treated to a fabulous meal generously donated by Julie Blalock of Kickin’ Catering of Flushing and prepared with assistance from the staff of the North End Soup Kitchen.
